Well guys i thought that mabey we can all think of ways to play mendis and nogotiate his incredible spin.

I start it off!

1. well you can get to the pitch of the bowl if you don't know what way the bowl will spin that way Mendes will try different things and lose his line and lenght.

actually from what i have observed is that mendis is not actually spinning the ball too much, more often than not, his deliveries are straight. i think IND shouldn't play for spin every single delivery.

BTW, i didn't saw yuvraj's innings in the first ODI, but from what i've heard, it appears as if he looked as clueless and clueless can be... totally out of sorts against mendis.

yeah, i was watching it live, and he just kept and leaving too much space between bat and pad because he was expecting it to turn a great deal, yet it didnt. And i think you are right that India are just anticipating for the ball to spin rather than actually looking at where it pitches and how much it deviates.

Yes i think he is kindof Anil Kumble for Srilanka now.  The way he delivers the ball is different and a little less speed than kumble.

I hope someone pass this information to the indian team.. Smiley

In my opinion, Mendis should be played with a horizontal bat whenever possible. Sweep shot is one good shot to play him, provided you can sweep like Matthew Hayden.

For a right-hander:

- If he leg spins, the ball will go in front of square.

- If he off spins, the ball will go behind square.

- If ball goes straight, the ball will go past the leg umpire.

With a horizontal bat, it does not matter what way it spins. So, I think Sweep is one good shot to play against Mendis.

I have seen Mendis in Sri Lanka's domestic series (SLT Interprovincial Limited over tourn. 2007) he didnt have to resort to his big spinning off break much in this series. Playing for no spin is not the answer either because he will rip one across you like he did to Gambhir in the test match. He pitched one outside leg to Gautam who is a left handed batsman and it hit the top of off as Gamhir left the ball expecting to pad it b'cause it landed outside leg.
